  • Paint a Map

How many colors would you need to paint any map, if you had to follow the rule, 'Countries sharing a common border must be painted different colors' ?

  • Paint a map, or
plan a trip

    Plan a trip

Here you'll look at a map of the U.S., will be given several trips to make (each requiring that you take various highways to visit different cities), and will be asked to find a route for each trip that passes through all the cities but uses each highway just once. It's not as easy as it looks!

  • Visit a strange land This example takes you to an amazing country where everyone is Here's what
Flatspacers look like. flatter than a pancake. It is a land that exists in only two dimensions.

    This skyscraper
stretches!

  • Stretch a skyscraper

By changing the height of this skyscraper, you can learn a little Trigonometry.

  • Color Soccer Jerseys How many jerseys
can you make with three colors?

If you are to design a soccer jersey for your team, and it must use only two colors, how many different designs could you come up with? How many could you find if you must use only three colors? Four colors?

  • Add the Angles

You visit a Mathematical Laboratory, and are given a triangle. With your mouse, you can change the shape of the triangle any way you want, and as it changes you will see the size of each of its three angles change. From this experiment, can you guess a famous rule about triangles that was proven many centuries ago by a Greek named Euclid?

  • Six Machines Here's a strange machine.

Here you'll observe the operation of six strange machines, and will find out what they all have in common.

  • How Far Can We See?

Do you believe the Earth is round? Why? One answer may be, that you've seen photos of the Earth taken from out in space. But before it was possible to take such pictures, how did people guess the Earth is round?

  • The Parabolic Pool Table

Most pool tables have straight sides--but not this one. One of its sides has the curved shape of a parabola. What do you suppose this table has in common with a flashlight and Try playing

  • Angles in Circles

In the Geometry section of the Mathematical Laboratory, you'll be able to change the size of a circle, and of the angle that fits inside it. Here's another rule you may be able to guess, if you're very sharp!

Look out for the alligators!
The Alligator Game is also part of Gnarly Math.
When you play, your object will be to cross a swamp full of man-eating alligators. To win the game, you must deduce where the beasts are by exploring the swamp and poking likely hiding places with your stick. In the example on the right, you started at the gray square at the bottom, and have so far located three alligators. You must reach the top row to win.
To enjoy the samples or the game,
you'll need a computer which runs under Windows--either a PC, or a Mac with Windows hardware or software.

To see the samples, click the file name here -- gnarly.exe -- to start downloading. File size is about 1.7 million bytes. To play the game, click the file name here -- aligator.exe-- to start downloading. The file size is about 2.2 million bytes.
When you click one or the other, you'll probably see a box which asks whether you want to 'run' or 'save' this file. Click 'run', and you'll be warned that 'the publisher could not be verified'. Click 'run' again and you'll be asked where you want the files unzipped to. Choose a folder (for example c:/temp or c:/gnarly) and click 'unzip'. You'll get the message '14 files unzipped successfully'.
Now go the the folder where you've unzipped the files (c:/temp or c:/gnarly) and click on the file named Gnarsamp or the file names Aligator. The program will now run and you can see the samples or play the game.
If you click first gnarly.exe and then aligator.exe and follow the above rules twice, you'll have both sample and game in the same folder.
If you have trouble downloading, or have any questions or comments on the examples, or the game, please use the "Comments" section further down this page.
